Companions Animal Center (formerly Kootenai Humane Society) had been at its location for over 40 years and needed a new animal shelter. Growth in Kootenai County over the past 40 years strained the capacity and functionality of the old animal shelter. The facility was past its useful life and needed to conform to the needs and requirements of a modern animal shelter.
Animal care facilities need to be functional and up-to-code. The new 22,000 sf Companions Animal Center is all of this and more. The center is a modern, bright, inviting animal care facility for the temporary housing of dogs, cats, and other small animals. The center has improved kennel areas for dogs and cats, interior and exterior meet-and-greet spaces, sick rooms, a grooming area, and enlarged laundry and dishwashing facilities. All center areas have their own ventilation units reducing the risk of spreading disease. A state-of-the-art veterinary clinic includes a surgery room with two tables, a surgical prep area, two exam rooms, a recovery room, a Lab, a room for an X-ray machine, and more kennel space. The center has an expanded lobby, front desk, administration offices, a dedicated Volunteer room, a workroom for the animal techs, and a large community room.
CAC is a non-profit animal shelter that relies on donations and fundraisers to support its mission. Our team worked closely with CAC to maximize their limited resources. We used cost-effective materials and designs. We are confident the new animal shelter will be a great asset to our community.
